Professional Nurse Traineeship
Professional nurse traineeship funds are awarded to The University of Texas School of Nursing at Houston by the Department of Health and Human Services to improve the quality and quantity of nursing leadership. The intent of the traineeship funds is to provide the opportunity for students to attend graduate school full-time and complete the degree requirements during the period of traineeship coverage.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet all of the requirements below:
- Meet the grantee institution’s full admission requirements for graduate study;
- Be a United States citizen, non-citizen national, or foreign national who possesses a visa permitting permanent residence in the United States;
- Have graduated from a State-approved school of nursing;
- Be currently licensed as a registered/professional nurse in the state;
- Be enrolled full-time (nine (9) semester credit hours) in a course of study; and
- Maintain good academic standing.

Deadlines
Applications must be received by July 1st in order to be considered for the new grant period which starts with the fall semester. Applications are kept on file and will be considered throughout the academic year as funding becomes available. Applications must be updated on a yearly basis for continued consideration.
Appointments
Students appointed to receive this award will be notified in writing by the Office of Academic Affairs. An initial Professional Nurse Traineeship appointment must be made for at least nine (9) months of study. Students awarded the professional nurse traineeship will receive tuition & fee payment for nine (9) semester credit hours and a monthly stipend for this nine (9) month appointment. Students receiving this award qualify for in-state tuition and fees.
Restrictions
Students may accept federal grant funds from only one (1) source at a time and funding may not exceed 36 months.
MSN students enrolled as 2nd and 3rd year nurse anesthesia students will not receive this particular award. Nurse Anesthesia students are encouraged to check with their Program Director regarding the possibility of funding through the Nurse Anesthesia Professional Nurse Traineeship grant.
The Professional Nurse Traineeship award will not pay liability or hospital insurance, property deposit, tuition for more than nine (9) semester hours, tuition for courses that must be retaken, audited courses, or for courses in excess of degree requirements.
Reappointments
Students receiving the professional nurse traineeship must reapply each year to be considered for continuation of the award. Appointment forms must be completed to activate the appointment.
