Make a Difference
Your support makes a difference by helping us accomplish our mission:
The School of Nursing is dedicated to improving the health of the people of the State of Texas, the nation, and our global community through educating professional nurses and innovative scientists who discover, apply, and translate advances in nursing as well as in the social and biomedical sciences.
Why your involvement matters:
- There is a nationwide nursing shortage, between now and 2020 the demand for nurses will grow 86% while the supply will only grow 53%. Texas will be short 71,000 RNs by 2020.
- A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association states the scarcity of nurses with Bachelors degrees appears to already be adversely affecting the quality of care patients are receiving.
- In 2006 alone we had 1875 applicants for 201 undergraduate openings. Since 2002 we have had a 190% increase in applicants but only a 64% increase in our ability to accept them.
- Professors to educate nurses are in short supply, increasingly difficult to recruit, and difficult to retain due to competition from hospitals and other teaching institutions offering more attractive salaries.
- Scholarships are vital because nursing school is expensive and intensive, taking a heavy toll on a student’s time and finances. While 66% of our students receive scholarships, most only cover a single semester or a single year of schooling, far short of what is needed.
- Research supported through private funding produces data that serves as a catalyst in acquiring government grants.
