Denton A. Cooley, M.D.
President, Texas Heart Institute

• Founder, president and surgeon-in-chief of the Texas Heart Institute
• Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital
• Performed the first successful human heart transplant in the U.S. and the first implantation of total artificial heart in man
• Awarded the National Medal of Freedom and the National Medal of Technology

• Appointed in April 2007 as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs
