School of Nursing awarded grant from George Foundation

The George Foundation of Ft. Bend County has awarded SON a $375,000 grant which will allow us to hire an additional faculty member, who will serve as liaison in the Ft. Bend County healthcare community to increase enrollment in our Bacc II program.

UT Houston Responds to Need for More Geriatric Specialists

Isla Carroll Turner Friendship Trust awards Center on Aging

The Isla Carroll Turner Friendship Trust awarded the Center on Aging $75,000 for operating funds. These funds are used to complete special projects related to aging and care of individuals in the community. The Isla Carroll Turner Friendship Trust has been a wonderful friend to the Center on Aging and has provided substantial funding over the years.

$1.2 Million Scholarship Awarded by John S. Dunn Research Foundation

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston — School of Nursing has been awarded $1.2 million by the John S. Dunn Research Foundation to fund scholarships for students entering the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Accelerated Nursing Program. “This is the largest single gift ever received by the School of Nursing,” said Patricia Starck, DSN, RN, FAAN, dean of the nursing school. “It will provide full-tuition scholarships for 78 nursing students through 2013. A nurse touches at least 1,000 patients and their families a year. The Dunn Foundation is making a great contribution to the health of this community with this magnanimous gift." Full story »

Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Approves Expansion of DNP Enrollment

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved expansion of the DNP program enrollment to include Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Anesthetists, and Nurse Administrators in addition to Nurse Practitioners. Both full and part time programs are available. Full story »

School of Nursing Celebrates LEED® Gold Certification At a noon event, Sept. 10, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Nursing celebrated its LEED® Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The School of Nursing and Student Community Center is the first LEED® Gold building in the University of Texas System, recognized by the USGBC’s rating system for the world's greenest, most energy efficient, and high performing buildings. Texas Governor Rick Perry Signs HB 4471 at School of Nursing Building

This legislation will provide money to nursing schools to increase enrollment to address the nursing shortage. UT Regents Janeice Longoria and Jim Dannenbaum also attended. The event was a celebration for nurses — those working in clinical facilities, nursing faculty, and future students.

     

"Caring Minds" Magazine Celebrates 2009’s Pacesetting Achievements

Caring Minds 2009The new issue of "Caring Minds" Magazine describes many of the School of Nursing’s achievements in 2008-09 as a pacesetter in nursing education and depicts special events honoring Dr. Patricia Starck’s silver anniversary as dean. US News & World Reports Top Graduate Schools of 2010

US News & World Reports Top Graduate Schools of 2010 The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston — School of Nursing maintained its rank among the top five percent of the nation’s nursing schools in the U.S. News & World Report's 2010 edition of the influential "America's Best Graduate Schools" guide. The School of Nursing ranked 19th among 395 master's programs surveyed, and its gerontological/geriatric nursing program is ranked No. 8 of the top 10 in this specialty. Full story »

"Live the Life of a Nurse" While Earning a BSN

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Nursing is now seeking applicants eligible for admission to its Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) program to sign up for its new Pacesetters option for fall 2010. “Our goal is to create an educational experience that will get the student living the life of a nurse while still in nursing school and help develop the strong critical thinking skills demanded by a clinical workplace,” says Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Cathy Rozmus, D.S.N., R.N.. New Accelerated Ph.D. Program Offers Faster Degree, Stipends for Fall 2010 Students

Accelerated PhD ProgramThe University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Nursing is planning to offer a very special opportunity for a small group of doctoral students to study full time in an Accelerated Ph.D. program that can be completed in just three years.
