Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate education prepares entry-level generalists to provide safe, high-quality care to diverse client populations in a variety of settings. The UT School of Nursing at Houston offers four programs that lead to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

Graduate Students

Education at the master’s level prepares graduates to assume leadership roles in nursing practice, administration and education. Advanced nursing practice graduates are prepared for entry into the Doctoral of Nursing Practice (DNP) program and all graduates are prepared for higher education in the Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD) program.

Doctoral Students

Doctoral education prepares clinical practice and research scholars who will function at the highest level of professional practice, contribute to the world’s body of scientific knowledge, and teach the next generation of nurses in research and clinical nursing.

Essential Skills for Nursing

Nurses must be able to demonstrate cognitive skills in critical thinking and logical/analytical thinking. Nurses must also have psychomotor skills, including fine motor dexterity, physical strength, coordination, and proper body mechanics. Observational skills are also required, such as the ability to hear within the normal decibel range, the ability to read English in regular to extra-fine print, and the ability to palpate/auscultate.
