What it takes to succeed in this type of program?
"For me, success in the accelerated program was about persistence, organization, and teamwork. The pace of the program was challenging, and there were many opportunities to throw up my hands and tell myself that I couldn’t keep up the pace. When those times came, I stopped looking at all I had to do in the next month and instead focused on what I need to get done for tomorrow and persisted in doing that. I took one day at a time and occasionally looked ahead just to make sure I wasn’t missing anything."
"Good organization made it possible to work one day at a time without missing anything or falling behind in anything. As long as my work for the classes I was taking was laid out well on a week by week basis, I could apply myself to the tasks at hand without constantly having to recheck myself in case I was missing something. Every time a new class started I laid out a tentative schedule with due dates for specific study and project tasks, then I would build a weekly schedule for the term based on those due dates. This allowed me to work in time with my family as well, which was extremely important. Rarely did I find myself coming up short on getting things done, and my stress level was much better as result."
" Finally, teamwork made a huge difference. The support of folks going through the program with you is so important because only they really know what it’s like. I spent endless amounts of time studying with my classmates, talking about projects with them, sharing my struggles and successes, and generally enjoying my relationships with them. Although success in the program does come from self-directed study I believe that true success in application of the principles of nursing to practice comes from working them out with your classmates through teamwork." --- 2006 Graduate
"Flexibility, drive, and the confidence in yourself that you can do whatever it takes to succeed. I made sure that I could survive financially without an income for a year. (reducing expenses, loans, applying for scholarships, and living frugally).
I treated this program like my job. I set aside at least 8 hours a day to the program, but I also made sure I made time for myself and husband. This program can be very stressful and overwhelming, in order to succeed, I think is very important to find time to relax. The time is there...you just have to take it. If I learned anything, it was that my sanity is sometimes more important than a 4.0." --- 2005 Graduate
