Master of Science in Nursing and Post-Master’s — Acute Care Nursing

The Acute Care Nursing clinical concentration prepares graduates to manage the care of adult patients with complex health deviations in tertiary settings. The curriculum focuses on all aspects of advanced practice including assessment, diagnosis, and disease management as well as technical skills required to manage care for acutely, critically, or chronically ill adults. An interdisciplinary education and practice model is emphasized.

MSN students and Post-Master’s students choose from the following functional roles:

  • Clinical Nurse Specialist
This role prepares advanced practice nurses to function in the areas of direct clinical practice, coaching and guidance, consultation, research, leadership, and collaboration. Students that complete the program are eligible to take the Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist certification examination offered by the AACN Certification Corporation or the Clinical Nurse Specialist in Adult Health Nursing certification examination offered by the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC).

  • Nurse Practitioner
This role prepares advanced practice nurses to care for patients across the continuum of acute care services. The focus of the program is to prepare advance practice nurses to practice in interdisciplinary collaborative practice models providing care for physiologically unstable, technologically dependent, vulnerable patients. Common health problems encountered by adult acutely ill patients are addressed. Students that complete the program are eligible to take the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification examination offered by the ANCC.

Requirements for the degree or certification depend upon the chosen functional role. Non-thesis options are available for students seeking a MSN.

Prospective students should be aware that all School of Nursing students are required to have a computer and must have basic computer skills. For more information on computer requirements see computer requirements and recommendations.
