Applicants should submit to the Registrar the following materials:
- A completed application for admission. Electronic submission preferred.
- A $30.00 non-refundable application fee (pay online when you are in the system or send check or money order payable in U.S. dollars drawn on a U.S. bank in the U.S. to: Office of the Registrar, UTHSC-H, P.O. Box 20036 Houston, Texas 77225). Note: The application fee is not due by the deadline for your program.
- Official scores for the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) taken within the last ten (10) years.
- Nurse Anesthesia applicants submitting GRE scores must have a score of 500 or greater on each of the Verbal and Quantitative sections and a minimum score of 3.5 on the written section of the Graduate Record Examination or a minimum score of 400 on the Miller Analogies Test.
- Other MSN applicants submitting GRE scores must have a combined minimum score of 1000 from the verbal section and the quantitative section and a minimum score of 3.0 on the analytical writing section. Applicants submitting MAT scores must have a minimum score of 400.
- This requirement may be waived for applicants who have completed a prior Master’s degree.
- One official copy of your transcript from each institution attended. If you have attended any school within The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston it is not necessary to request a transcript. Electronic submission is preferred. Transcript(s) should show:
- A Baccalaureate degree in nursing earned from an accredited program. Applicants must have a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- A Master’s degree in nursing from an accredited school if Post-Master’s applicant.
- A completed basic statistics course.
- A completed organic chemistry course or equivalent biochemistry course if Nurse Anesthesia applicant.
- Three (3) satisfactory academic/professional references. Supply individual references with an applicant letter of reference form (pdf).
- One official copy of TOEFL score if international applicant. TOEFL scores can be no more than two (2) years old and a minimum score of 550 is required on the paper exam, a minimum score of 213 on the computer-based exam, or a minimum score of 86 on the internet-based exam.
- A course-by-course evaluation of international credentials by Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) for individuals with degrees from outside the US.
- Evidence of current Texas nursing licensure or for Post-Master’s applicants, evidence of nursing licensure in state of residence.
- Documentation of BCLS, ACLS, or PALS certification.
- A professional curriculum vitae or resume.
- Documentation on application of minimum work experience for chosen clinical concentration:
Clinical Concentration Experience Acute Care Nursing One year experience in critical care as a registered nurse Adult Health One year clinical experience as a registered nurse Family Nurse Practitioner One year clinical experience as a registered nurse Gerontological Nursing No minimum work experience required Nurse Anesthesia One year experience in critical care as a registered nurse, two years preferred Pediatric Nurse Practitioner One year clinical experience in pediatrics Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing No minimum work experience required Women’s Health Care No minimum work experience required
Additional Requirements:
- An interview is required of qualified applicants and is by invitation.
- Writing samples may be required at the time of an interview.
Additional Requirements (if admitted into program):
Enrollment is contingent upon successful completion of a basic statistics course (for all programs) and Organic Chemistry (Nurse Anesthesia Program only), immunization screening, immigration status clearance, Health Care Provider Basic Life Support (CPR) Certification, and clearance of the mandatory criminal background check. All new students must successfully clear a criminal background check prior to enrollment.
