The Master of Science in Nursing and Post-Master’s Adult Health clinical concentration prepares graduates to care for adults from adolescence through the lifespan. A systems approach is used to consider common reoccurring health problems in adults. A holistic and multidisciplinary approach to care focuses on health promotion and disease prevention. The clinical component provides experiences in caring for adults.
Post-Master’s students must choose a functional role of Clinical Nurse Specialist or Nurse Practitioner. MSN students choose from any of the following functional roles:
-
Clinical Nurse Specialist
This role prepares advanced practice nurses to function in the areas of direct clinical practice, coaching and guidance, consultation, research, leadership, and collaboration. Students that complete the program are eligible to take the Clinical Nurse Specialist in Adult Health certification examination offered by the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC).
-
Nurse Practitioner
This role prepares advanced practice nurses to care for patients across the health care continuum. Students that complete the program are eligible to take the Adult Nurse Practitioner certification examination offered by the ANCC or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
-
Education
This role prepares nursing students for faculty positions in programs of basic professional education, staff development or consumer education. The role focuses on curriculum and instructional design, principles of teacher-learner communication, learner assessment, and evaluation.
For information on clinical preceptorships, please see our Preceptor Guidelines (pdf).
