Master of Science in Nursing
Master of Public Health Dual Degree Program

The University of Texas School of Nursing at Houston and The University of Texas School of Public Health at Houston offer a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)-Master of Public Health (MPH) dual degree program that allows students to earn both degrees while simultaneously enrolled in both schools. The program merges the best of nursing and public health to prepare advanced practice nurses for leadership positions. MSN-MPH graduates have greater access to jobs of the future in primary care, population-based practice, program administration, education, and research.

Course work includes science-based and clinical courses in nursing, public health core courses and electives, and integrative courses collaboratively taught by nursing and public health faculty. Students receive both degrees with one synthesis project and with fewer credits than would otherwise be required for two separate degrees.

Students in the program select a clinical concentration with a functional role of Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) for their MSN and a public health discipline for their MPH. Availability of the functional role for the MSN varies depending on the chosen clinical concentration. Prospective students are encouraged to review the MSN clinical concentrations and available roles as well as the MPH disciplines to determine their areas of interest.

Requirements for the dual degree depend on the clinical concentration, functional role, and public health discipline chosen and are outlined in the curriculum overviews. Non-thesis options are available.

Prospective students should be aware that all School of Nursing students are required to have a computer and must have basic computer skills. For more information on computer requirements see computer requirements and recommendations.

Applicants to the dual degree program must apply to both schools separately and meet the admission and degree requirements of each school. Applicants are strongly encouraged to seek advisement before applying. To request further information consult the director of the program at the School of Nursing and the appropriate School of Public Health Division contacts.
