Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)-Master of Public Health (MPH) — Occupational Health for Nurses Focus Curriculum Overview§

The program of study for a MSN-MPH with an Occupational Health for Nurses focus combines online courses with face-to-face courses and clinical experiences offering flexibility to students. Several of the courses offered are designated as shared courses and count for credit at the School of Nursing and the School of Public Health. If earned separately, the two degrees would require 87 to 93 semester hours. The dual degree as outlined below requires 68 to 75 semester hours to complete.

Requirements for the degree depend upon the chosen clinical concentration, functional role, public health electives, and synthesis option. Availability of the functional roles of Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) varies depending on the chosen clinical concentration. Students have the following clinical concentrations from which to choose: Acute Care Nursing (NP or CNS), Adult Health (NP or CNS), and Family Nurse Practitioner (NP only). Additionally, students have one (1) of three (3) synthesis options from which to choose: A thesis, a culminating project, or evaluation and application of research in advanced nursing practice.

Each student will be assigned an academic advisor at the School of Nursing at the time of admission to the program. The student and the academic advisor will complete a degree plan to specify which courses are to be taken to complete the degree requirements for the MSN. Note that at the School of Nursing 1 semester hour of credit is earned for:

• 3 clock hours per week of clinical experience,
• 1 clock hour per week of lecture, or
• 2 clock hours per week of seminar.
