Oncology Nursing

The Oncology Nursing clinical concentration is designed to prepare advanced practice nurses to care for individuals and families that have or are at risk for cancer. The dimensions of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention as well as illness care, supportive care, rehabilitation, and survivorship are studied from a holistic view. Students gain experience in working as a member of an interdisciplinary team comprised of advanced practice oncology nurses, physicians, and other health professionals

Oncology courses concentrate on epidemiology, diagnostic evaluation, classification, staging, and various treatment modalities. Physiological, psychosocial, and cultural/behavioral elements of the cancer experience are examined.

Post-Master’s students choose from the following functional roles:

  • Clinical Nurse Specialist

    This role prepares advanced practice nurses to function in the areas of direct clinical practice, coaching and guidance, consultation, research, leadership, and collaboration in the care of oncology patients and their families. Students that complete the program are eligible to take the Advanced Oncology Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist certification examination offered by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC).

  • Nurse Practitioner

    This role emphasizes holistic care in the case management of the individual with cancer and his or her family. Students that complete the program are eligible to take the Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner certification examination offered by the ONCC.

Requirements for the certification are outlined in the curriculum overview.
