Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing
The Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Program is designed to prepare researchers and faculty scholars to develop, test, and implement innovation in health care delivery and to teach the next generation of nurses in research. Doctoral graduates of the program have various career options, including faculty positions in schools or colleges of nursing, director and investigator positions in nursing related research programs, and advanced practice roles in health care delivery.
Graduates with a PhD will be prepared to:
- Collaborate with other health professionals in providing nursing and health services through community-based models and/or in clinical settings.
- Apply substantive knowledge in innovative research models designed to improve the quality, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness of health care
- Integrate knowledge from a broad array of sources into a comprehensive understanding of health and health care for a selected population or area of practice.
- Advance the body of knowledge through identifying gaps in the knowledge base for practice, conducting research on nursing interventions and health care outcomes, and disseminating research findings.
- Demonstrate scholarship in the educational role by teaching and mentoring students.
- Demonstrate leadership, analytical, and collaborative strategies in the development and implementation of health policy on the local, state, and national levels.
Requirements for the degree include successful completion of 66 hours of course work, a written and oral candidacy examination to determine student’s readiness for pursuing dissertation research, and an original research dissertation.
