Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing

The mission of the PhD Program in Nursing at the University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston is to prepare nurse scientists to be leaders in the nursing profession, healthcare systems, education, research, and policy arenas. Graduates of this program will serve as leaders in the promotion and application of nursing and transdisciplinary research and knowledge. Through leadership, our goal is to improve the health of people by the integration of theory, research, and practice.

Objectives

Graduates should be able to:

  1. Synthesize theoretical and empirical knowledge from nursing and other academic disciplines in relation to health and healthcare.
  2. Conceptualize, design, and conduct clinical and population-based research that advances science.
  3. Extend, promote, and disseminate knowledge generated by independent, collaborative, and transdisciplinary research and scholarship.
  4. Articulate health care issues and policy in relation to social, ethical, and cultural phenomena related to the area of scholarship.

Requirements for the degree include successful completion of 66 hours of course work, a written and oral candidacy examination to determine student’s readiness for pursuing dissertation research, and an original research dissertation.
